History of the Bioness Company

  • 2004

A group of visionary leaders founded Bioness Inc. to help individuals with neurological impairments regain their independence. With the support of entrepreneur and philanthropist Alfred E. Mann, Bioness was founded to develop and distribute neuromodulation devices in the field of rehabilitation. Bioness is in partnership with NESS Ltd. launched two devices in the United States: the H200 Hand Rehabilitation System to help those with upper limb impairments and the L300 Foot Drop System to help those with foot drop regain normal gait.

Bioness took this partnership a step further by acquiring NESS Ltd., enabling Bioness to bring together its new products under development with NESS's commercial products.

Bioness has released L300 Plus for Thigh Weakness. The L300 Plus System builds on the success of the L300 Foot Drop System by adding a thigh attachment to give patients more control over bending and straightening their knees, which can help them walk more naturally.


Bioness has released the H200 Wireless Hand Rehabilitation System.


Bioness has received FDA approval to market the L300 Foot Drop System for pediatric use. Results of a 30-week trial looking at the impact of L300 compared to the standard of care in subacute and chronic stroke were published in the journal Stroke. Bioness has released the Vector Gait and Safety System, a dynamic, overhead rehabilitation system designed to load a precise amount of body weight during physical and occupational therapy.


Bioness was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in Medical Design and Excellence (MDEA). The results of the study, dealing with the effect of L300 on subacute and chronic stroke, were published in the journal Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R). Bioness published the Bioness Integrated Therapy System ( BITS) to assess and improve ability and performance in people with disabilities and competitive athletes.
